The Vladivostok Independent Cruiser Squadron swung into action almost immediately. It launched its first raid against Japanese cargo vessels the day hostilities commenced. It broke through the ice around the harbour to leave port. (AC)

The Combined Fleet returned to Sasebo after attacking Port Arthur. It briefly refuelled and rearmed before returning. It was accompanied by five blockships, cargo ships loaded with stones and concrete, averaging 2,000 tons displacement. Port Arthur had only one narrow and shallow channel. Sinking the blockships in it would cork the 1st Pacific Squadron, now in the inner harbour, inside with no means of escape. The fleet arrived shortly before midnight on 23 February.
